Initial Game Jam Submission
Approximately 30 minutes ago the deadline for the Wolfjaw Game Jam (Wolfjam) passed, and I sent in my submission just in the nick of time! The theme was connection, something I found inspiring and had lofty goals for that had to quickly be pared down due to time restraints. The project uploaded is far from the one I had envisioned in my head, but that's sort of how it goes with these quick 24 hour jams. The cool thing though is that now I've been forced to create a working prototype (however rough) that now I have a perfect starting starting point to create something much more polished. I look forward to being able to upload a more polished product, but for my first ever solo jam I'm proud of myself. The following is the write up I added into my submission:
Inspiration
I was inspired by the themes of connection. My initial idea was that you've woken up in a waiting room (hopefully the final one). You can only move on when you can tell the door about your life, something that' s hard to do with no memories . In order to pass on, you must listen to the thoughts of the others waiting with you. When you think you know who you were, go to the door and answer its questions. But be careful, you only have three chances to ask before your time runs out! Sadly I did not have enough time to fulfill that mission completely, but I look forward to polishing my game more in the future!
What it does
You must puzzle out who you are and how the people amongst you are connected. Without a quiz there is no true end point, and you can only wonder who you were.
How we built it
I built it in Unity using C# scripting. I used some free to use assets (linked in resource PDF) as well as some of my own art for the main character and the other sprites.
Challenges we ran into
Time was a major challenge as I ran out and was unable to implement many of my goals.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm very proud of the dialogue system, I spent a lot of time on it and took the initial instructions from the tutorial to make it my own.
What we learned
I learned more about UI, events, and dialogue, as well as combining Unity's animator and scripting events.
What's next for Waiting Room
I hope to polish it a lot by adding more in depth story/dialogue, sound effects, background music, and a quiz at the door to move on. As a stretch goal I also hope to possibly add more levels, and create a more in depth story. I may also replace the character assets with something more polished, possibly even 3D.
